From single molecules to tissues (Nov 02, 2006)
An interesting conference will take place in Bobigny (Paris region, France) from Sept. 1 to 6, 2007. Topics span a broad range of techniques such as the application of optical spectroscopy (UV, CD, Raman, SERS, IR, fluorescence, microfluorimetry) to different biosystems, multidimensional spectroscopies and magnetic spectroscopies (NMR, MRI and EPR), just to name a few. Chianti is back! (Oct 20, 2006)
Our member Mario Piccioli sent us the following message:
"Chianti Workshop is Back! The famous Conference on Nuclear Relaxation will take place, from June 3 to June 8 2007, in Vallombrosa (Florence). Co-Chairs of the Meeting will be Astrid Graslund (University of Stockholm) and Ivano Bertini (University of Florence). A first list of speakers will be soon available. Attendance will be limited to 100 participants. Participation will be considered on the basis of "first come, first served". For information and registration, please monitor the congress web site".

GIDRM member Carla Marchioro sent us the following information:
"SMASH 2007 will be held in the Chamonix, France from September 16th through September 19th. Chamonix is located 85 km southeast of Geneva in the Alps, but don't worry the altitude is only about 1000 meters. Chamonix is a popular destination for skiing, in fact it was the site of the First Winter Olympics Games in 1924. There is plenty to see and do during the late summer too."

2D-NMR in Earth's Magnetic Field (Aug 09, 2006)
Although all NMR textbooks usually categorize 2D techniques into two groups according to the homonuclear-heteronuclear paradigm, other approaches exist. At very low magnetic fields, such as the Earth's magnetic field (about 0.6 G), resonance frequencies of different nuclei are close and can be all excited at the same time with a single pulse. If J-couplings exist between different nuclei they can be exploited in a COSY-type experiment which is neither homo- nor heteronuclar, but something in-between, where each dimension carries the signals from all NMR-active nuclei in the molecule under study.
This (and more) is elegantly shown in a forthcoming paper in JMR by Robinson et al: an enjoyable read for the real NMR afficionado.

Scuola NMR 2006. Corso Avanzato (Jun 25, 2006)
I colleghi Botta, Fasano, Gobetto e Spoldi, che si occupano dell'organizzazione della ormai nota scuola NMR di Torino ci fanno sapere che si terrà dal 28 agosto al 1 settembre 2006 il corso avanzato NMR, a proseguimento della scuola di base dell'anno scorso. La scuola, è organizzata dal GIRM e Fobiotech, con la partecipazione del GIDRM. Tutte le informazioni sono nel file pdf qui allegato e sul sito web della Fondazione per le Biotecnologie di Torino.
Patrocinio GIDRM al Premio Sapio 2006 (Jun 23, 2006)
Anche quest'anno il GIDRM patrocina insieme ad altri importanti enti italiani il Premio Sapio per la ricerca italiana 2006.
Secondo gli organizzatori, il Premio Sapio è "la rassegna scientifica che dal 1999 rappresenta uno degli appuntamenti più attesi dalla comunità scientifica italiana. Il Premio è il frutto di un'efficace concertazione tra Università, Centri di Ricerca e Istituzioni, creata per dare impulso alla ricerca scientifica, sensibilizzando cittadini, mondo politico, imprenditoriale e accademico sull'importanza che essa riviste per la competitività del Sistema Italia e per la qualità della nostra vita. La peculiarità del Premio è rappresentata dalla sinergia tra pubblico [...] e privato".
I temi dell'edizione 2006 comprendono: Biotecnologie, Salute e Sociale, Nanotecnologie, Energia/Ambiente/Economia e Divulgazione Scientifica. Purtroppo, come già lo scorso anno, non compaiono le risonanze magnetiche come tali, ma crediamo che possano essere ricomprese in molte delle tematiche oggetto del Premio.

GIDRM-GIRM Gold Medal awarded to Claudio Dalvit (Jun 19, 2006)
The Gruppo Interdivisionale Risonanze Magnetiche (GIRM) of the Italian Chemical Society (SCI) and the GIDRM have awarded the GIDRM-GIRM Gold Medal 2006 to our member Dr. Claudio Dalvit (Nerviano Medical Sciences) for his contribution in the development and implementation of original, innovative methodologies in the field of molecular recognition and drug discovery. Dr. Dalvit will receive the GIDRM-GIRM Medal on September 22, 2006, during the XXXVI Italian National Congress on Magnetic Resonance. On behalf of the GIDRM members we wish to convey to Dr. Dalvit our warmest congratulations!

Why did I not think about it ? (Jun 16, 2006)
If you are left with the idea that everything has been already discovered or that what is yet to be discovered is too difficult for your own abilities, read this article about solvent evaporation in press in the JMR. The abstract reads: "We present a simple, generally applicable approach to prevent sample evaporation when working at elevated temperatures in high resolution NMR. It consists of experimentally sealing the NMR sample by a second liquid...". How many times have you had the same problem? Enjoy your read!
A new company in the NMR-world (Jun 08, 2006)
Our member Gianni Ferrante informed us that a new company called "Invento" has been launched through the support of the Incubator Project of the University of Torino (Italy). According to the Invento web site "the strategic mission of INVENTO is to be a high-tech company committed to the development of novel, easy-to-use, analytical procedures for the characterization of complex matrices in the field of bio-medicine, food and material sciences". The scientific board of Invento includes other members of GIDRM, such as Silvio Aime and Claudio Luchinat. We wish Gianni success with the new company and look forward to seeing the progress of his work.

Nuovo direttivo del GIRM (Apr 21, 2006)
Poiché molti dei nostri soci sono anche soci del Gruppo Interdivisionale Risonanze Magnetiche (GIRM) della Società Chimica Italiana, crediamo di far cosa gradita riportando di seguito il messaggio della socia Carla Marchioro, da ieri past-president del GIRM.

Medaglia: messaggio del presidente del GIDRM (Apr 07, 2006)
Cari soci GIDRM, vi scrivo per segnalarvi che tra poco più di un mese scadrà la possibilità di proporre candidature per la medaglia GIDRM-GIRM. Infatti, da regolamento le proposte devono pervenire entro e non oltre quattro mesi precedenti lo svolgimento del Congresso Nazionale, che come sapete si terrà a Vietri a Mare dal 20 al 23 Settembre. Chiedo pertanto a coloro che hanno proposte da inoltrare, di farlo entro il 20 Maggio 2006. Tanti auguri di successo per il futuro al nostro socio Stefano Tiziani per il recente conseguimento del PhD in Food Science and Nutrition presso la Ohio State University (USA). Stefano ha "difeso" (come si dice da loro) una tesi dal titolo "Physico-Chemical Characterization of a Novel Functional Food: Tomato Juice with Soy". Speriamo che prima o poi forniscano anche in Italia delle toghe belle come quella che ha indossato lui!

Structural Characterisation of Proteins by NMR, X-Ray Diffraction and Computational Methods (Jan 31, 2006)
Our member Mauro Fasano informed us about the title workshop. The aim of the workshop is to bring together scientists with expertise in protein crystallography, NMR spectroscopy and computing strategies for determination of protein structure. The programme will include invited plenary lectures, oral presentations and round table discussions directed to an up-dating of the most recent achievements in this field using different but complementary approaches. One of the Round Tables discussion will focus on Dynamics and Interactions; the other will be reserved to young scientists. A preliminary list of invited speakers include: R. Huber, C. Luchinat, R. Casadio, M. Bolognesi, L. Zetta, D. Mierke, G. Colombo.
Attendance is limited to 100 participants. Sullo Spin Nucleare (Jan 25, 2006)
Il nostro socio e membro del consiglio direttivo Gaetano Barbato ci invia un breve sunto di un articolo (uscito su Science alla fine del 2005) che probabilmente non è stato notato dalla nostra comunità.
